High BRIX Farming

We at Blooming Patches CSA Farm know that more nutrient dense foods are far better for us than less nutrient dense foods.   Along with nutrients, foods that have a reasonably high level of natural sugars are better able to resist disease and insects!

We farm using methods to yield "High BRIX" foods.   "BRIX" is a term referring to the carbohydrate level in a plant's juice or sap.   But, high-BRIX farming methods actually yields so much more than you might imagine.   High brix farming is not merely by testing the level of sugars in a plant.   A Brix meter ends up measuring the volume taken up by sucrose, fructose, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, proteins, and other solids in plant juice.

If you are really into this, click over to our tab on How Nutrition Works under our Links & Resources Tab for a basic lesson in minerals and nutrients in our foods and why we need them.

Below are some links for you.   Or, you can do your own search on the web.   Use the term "high BRIX" or type in "Brix food".   (If you use the term "Brix" alone, you will see links to toys, building bricks, etc.   So, add another relevant word to narrow the results!)

We amend our soil each year, and throughout the year as necessary to provide you with the highest BRIX produce we can.   Furthermore, we use only natural products for improving the soil. There is NO chemical fertilizer on our farm!   We even refrain from labeled "Organic" insecticides.   We are trying to be as chemical-free as possible.

It is our belief, based on the research, that high BRIX plants will naturally repel insects, molds, and disease.   We are seeking to raise the standard of the soil, so the plants can grow with plenty of nutrition.   Eating from these plants, or feeding livestock (chickens for eggs and meat, goats for milk, etc.) from this harvest will further lead to better nutrition for you!

If you weren't convinced before that buying from a local farm (such as Blooming Patches) is best for you, we hope that knowing of our dedication to high BRIX farming will help you to know that our produce will be much, much better for you than what you may find in a grocery store!
